AUGUSTA, Ga. — Aside from the back nine on Sunday, when results crystallize and the winner emerges, the best part of the Masters is the entire day on Thursday, when the tournament finally begins and all the speculative chatter ends.
There is no sound like the silence that envelopes the first tee behind the manor clubhouse at Augusta National just after the starter says, as he will for the 7:45 a.m. threesome: “Fore, please, Jonathan Byrd driving.”
Byrd may or may not emerge as a story line in this 75th Masters. But when he strikes the first tee ball, the loud report will mark the official start of the year’s first major, an event that is still — despite what one might have read, heard or seen in the run-up — wide open.
Phil Mickelson leapt into the unfilled role of favorite when he won easily at the Shell Houston Open last week, blistering the weekend with rounds of 63 and 65. He will have two drivers in the bag this week, just as he did in 2006 when he followed an 11-stroke win at Atlanta with his second Masters championship.
“To be able to have that type of performance heading into here feels very good,” Mickelson said. “Reminds me a lot of 2006 when I was able to put it together the week before and carry the momentum through.”

Loan Officer Compensation
Hearing on Loan Officer Compensation Changes Scheduled Today:
the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia issued a temporary stay on the implementation of new laws regulating loan officer compensation. The stay came in appellate court after motions for temporary restraining orders by the National Association of Mortgage Brokers (NAMB) and the National Association of Independent Housing Professionals (NAIHP) failed in district court.
When the stay was issued, the court gave the government until Monday, April 4th, to answer the concerns of NAMB and NAIHP. Their response to the legal issues raised by NAMB and NAIHP can be found here. NAMB and NAIHP had until today (April 5th) at 10 AM to file a response to the government’s response (click here to read response). A further hearing on the matter is expected today.
The rules, originally due to take effect on Friday, April 1st, were intended to prevent loan officers from taking advantage of borrowers by:
- Preventing loan officers from being compensated by both the borrower and the lender
- Preventing loan officers from being compensated based upon the interest rate or other terms of a loan
- Preventing loan officers from steering borrowers into a mortgage not in the borrower’s best interest in order to increase the loan officer’s compensation.
Although well-intentioned, many fear that the rules will increase consolidation in the industry, decrease competition, and eventually increase borrowing costs for consumers. Some also fear that the rule favors large banks and loan originators while hurting smaller lenders. In addition to the industry groups, some senators and representatives urged the Fed to wait to implement the changes.
As soon as there is an outcome from the hearing, I will post it here.

Loch of the Lowes osprey's mate raises chick hopes
The male mate of the osprey thought to be the oldest breeding female in the UK has returned to nest at a Perthshire wildlife reserve.
Staff at the Loch of the Lowes reserve near Dunkeld said mating had begun between the male and the 26-year-old female, named Lady by staff.
There had been fears that Lady would not survive migration to Africa last year after becoming ill.
However, she returned to Dunkeld last week, her 21st year at the sanctuary.
Anna Cheshier, the Scottish Wildlife Trust's Perthshire ranger, said: "Not long after the male osprey arrived on the nest, mating began and continued to take place for most of yesterday morning."
'New father'She added: "Arriving five days later than our female, we are absolutely thrilled to see a mate on the nest.
"Last year, this bird's behaviour indicated that he was a fairly new father but he really proved himself last season, following his paternal instincts to fish and provide for his chicks, particularly when our resident female suffered a bout of illness.
"His return and the pair's subsequent mating early into the season certainly increases the chances of chicks on the nest at Loch of the Lowes again this year."
Ms Cheshier said that the female osprey's unusually advanced age meant there were concerns over her fertility.
She added: "Only time will tell if she will go on to lay eggs and produce chicks. If she does manage to do so, she will be adding to her already impressive record of laying 58 eggs and producing 48 chicks so far in her lifetime."
Female ospreys generally lay two to four eggs in early April. They then hatch about six weeks later.

Air France 447 search yields fresh hope with discovery of debris on seabed
Pieces of wreckage from an Air France plane that crashed in the Atlantic in 2009 with 228 people on board have been recovered by underwater teams, according to French investigators.
A fourth attempt began last month to locate remains of the aircraft, and particularly its flight recorders, in the hope of determining the cause of the still unexplained disaster.
The wreckage was recovered at the weekend by a salvage vessel equipped with unmanned submarines, the French air accident investigation agency, the BEA, said on Sunday night. The agency said the pieces were identified as parts of flight 447, which crashed on 1 June 2009 en route from Rio de Janeiro to Paris.
In what was the worst loss of life involving an Air France plane in the firm's 75-year history, those who died included more than 30 nationalities. Search operations that took place in the wake of the crash led to the recovery of 50 bodies as well as hundreds of pieces of the aircraft, including its torn-off tail, but the last search ended in May 2010 after it had failed to find the plane's voice and data recorders.
The latest search, which is being carried out using a deep-sea vessel called Alucia and is being financed by the plane's manufacturers, Air France and Airbus, has been designed to cover an area of approximately 3,900 sq miles.
Robotic equipment has been used to forage in depths of up to 4,000 metres in an area of the ocean floor between Africa and Brazil. Finding the black boxes is seen as essential to help crash experts and relatives understand why flight 447 plunged into a remote part of the Atlantic during an equatorial storm.
"This is very good news because it brings with it the hope that at last we will get some information on what caused this accident, which to this day remains unexplained," Air France-KLM's chief executive Pierre-Henri Gourgeon said.
Speculation about the cause of the crash has focused on the possible icing-up of the aircraft's speed sensors, which appeared to give inconsistent readings seconds before the plane vanished. But an accident report said it was impossible to establish a clear cause without further data held in the missing recorders.
"We do hope that the discovery will lead to the retrieval and reading of the two recorders because this data is essential for the understanding of this accident," said a spokesman for Airbus.
A passenger jet carries two recorders, one for cockpit voices and another to log data from the aircraft's systems.
Air France and Airbus were both placed under formal investigation over the crash last month as part of a French criminal investigation into the causes of the crash. Groups representing victims' families have criticised the way previous searches were carried out.

The ratings agency said the revision also reflects the heightened potential for a one-notch downgrade if S&P's expectation for a modest recovery in demand for new homes doesn't take hold in 2011. S&P said U.S. new-home sales dropped to a new cyclical low in early 2011, and home prices continue to fall.
S&P currently rates PulteGroup at BB-, which is three notches into junk.
Analyst James Fielding said despite considerable scale and diversity, PulteGroup has been slower to return to profitability relative to several peers. ThunderBolt sales bolt ahead of iPhone 4 at some Verizon stores
The ThunderBolt smartphone from HTC has outsold the iPhone 4 at some Verizon Wireless stores, according to a survey of 150 stores by BTIG analyst Walter Piecyk.
The LTE-capable ThunderBolt, which has won praise for fast downloads of 12 Mbit/sec. or more, went on sale two weeks ago. The iPhone 4 first went on sale at Verizon stores in February.
Piecyk told Wired that his firm called 150 Verizon stores in 22 major cities in the last week asking whether more ThunderBolts or iPhone 4s were sold.
A total of 61% of the stores said they sold the same amount of both phones, while 28% had sold more ThunderBolts and 11% said they sold more iPhones (mainly in the Southeast U.S.).
Verizon rarely reveals sales figures, although the company did say that the iPhone 4 launch resulted in more sales in the first two hours than any other phone.
Verizon could not be reached immediately on Friday to comment about the BTIG survey.
A sales representative for a Verizon store in Framingham, Mass., said that the store "sells a lot of iPhone 4s and a lot of ThunderBolts, so they compete against each other pretty well."
While the fast LTE speeds of the ThunderBolt have improved browsing by 10 times or more over Verizon's CDMA/EV-DO 3G network speeds, some reviewers and testers have noticed the smartphone depletes its battery quickly, and Verizon is selling a $50 added-capacity battery atop the $250 hardware price, when purchased with a service plan.
